Michigan City man stabbed to death with machete, police say

TRAIL CREEK | A person was arrested Sunday after a Michigan City man was stabbed to death with a machete Sunday during a fight at a home in Trail Creek, police said.

Thomas Arndt, 54, was found laying on the front lawn of a home in the 100 block of Hummingbird Drive with several wounds to his body, Indiana State Police said.

A machete was found stuck in the ground nearby, police said.

The suspect's name was not being released Sunday pending formal charges, Indiana State Police said.

Trail Creek police were called about 1 p.m. about an argument at a residence in the 100 block of Hummingbird Drive, police said.

During the call, someone yelled the argument had turned into a stabbing, police said.

Trail Creek police arrived and found Arndt, who was taken by ambulance to Franciscan St. Anthony Health hospital in Michigan City. Arndt was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.

The suspect was taken into custody at the scene, police said.

Witnesses told police the argument was about property, police said.

The Indiana State Police Criminal Investigation Division is investigating the stabbing at the request of Trail Creek Town Marshal Steve Dick, police said.

The LaPorte County prosecutor’s office, Trail Creek police, LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan City Police Department and LaPorte County EMS assisted. The investigation is ongoing, state police said.
