NIPSCO crews are planning to conduct a burn-off of natural gas this week about four miles south of the town of New Carlisle, police said Wednesday. The photo above, provided by NIPSCO, depicts a flare from a previous burn off of natural gas. 

NIPSCO crews are planning to conduct a burn-off of natural gas this week about 4 miles south of New Carlisle, according to the LaPorte County Sheriff's Department. 

The planned burn is scheduled to start Thursday and possibly extend through Sunday in the far eastern portion of LaPorte County on County Road 1000 East and north of County Road 150 North, according to LaPorte County sheriff's Capt. Mike Kellems. 

County Road 1000 East is known as Timothy Road in St. Joseph County, he said.

With this burn, also known as a flare, people in the area can expect to see a large flame that extends up to about 50 feet in the air.

LaPorte sheriff’s deputies and firefighters from the Kankakee Fire Department will be on site and standing by for the duration of the event along with crews from NIPSCO, Kellems said.
