UPDATE: Man killed in LaPorte County crash

LAPORTE — The driver of a pickup truck died Thursday following a head-on collision with a semi-tractor trailer along U.S. 6 near County Road 875 East.

Michael Megyeri, 63, of South Bend, died after becoming pinned in his truck following a crash a little after noon Thursday, according to a news release from LaPorte County Police Capt. Mike Kellems.

Megyeri died as firefighters attempted to extricate him from his pickup truck, Kellems said. The driver of the tractor trailer had minor injuries.

Megyeri was westbound on U.S. 6 in his 2004 Dodge truck when he crossed the center line and struck an eastbound semi-tractor trailer, according to police. The semi driver drove off the roadway and through a wire fence in an attempt to avoid the oncoming vehicle, police said. Though the semi-tractor was heavily damaged, the trailer, carrying a non-toxic concrete hardening compound, remained intact and none of the contents leaked, police said.

The LaPorte County Coroner’s Office is assisting in the investigation in an effort to determine why Megyeri drove left of center. Investigators are attempting to learn if there may have been a medical issue. A routine part of the investigation will include toxicology screening of the victim.

The semi-truck driver passed a certified breath test.

Buddy Kasinger, a spokesman for LaPorte County Emergency Medical Service, said a helicopter was requested to transport the critically injured driver to a hospital but low cloud cover prevented one from coming out. The driver died minutes later.

"There was a prolonged extrication to get him out of the pickup truck. We were able to get him into the ambulance but at that time he had no pulse," Kasinger said.

U.S 6 reopened just after 2 p.m.
