East Chicago Councilman Robert Battle, 42, was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Porter County on an initial charge of possession of marijuana.

Sgt. Ann Wojas, spokeswoman for the Lowell District of Indiana State Police, said Battle was stopped for speeding in a construction zone on Interstate 94 three miles east of Ind. 49 near Chesterton.

She said Battle was also in possession of about 40 grams -- about 1.4 ounces -- of marijuana.

Wojas said Battle was arrested on a misdemeanor charge and taken to Porter County Jail and was booked in about 2:30 p.m. He has since bonded out.

Porter County Prosecutor Brian Gensel said Battle has no formal charges pending and the matter is still being investigated.

While an earlier report said Battle was also arrested on a dealing cocaine charge, Wojas said that was a clerical error on the part of the Indiana State Police.

Battle, a Democrat, is seeking a second term representing the city's 3rd District in November's general election.
