PORTER — A 70-year-old man told Porter County police $900 was stolen from his house while he was distracted by a stranger offering to cut his trees.

The man said the stranger came to his house at 4 p.m. Monday in the 1500 block of Birch Street offering to cut trees, police said.

Another individual remained in the truck while the resident walked to his backyard with the stranger. The man attempted to get the resident to walk farther out into the yard and after 10 minutes, the pair returned to the house.

After the man left, the resident noticed about $900 had been taken from his home, police said.

The man said he did not lock his front door and noticed the vehicle was gone when he and the stranger walked back to the house, police said.

The stranger was described as Hispanic, in his early 40s and wearing red/orange sunglasses, a baseball cap and a hooded sweatshirt, police said. No description was provided of the other individual, but the vehicle was a gray extended cab truck, police said.
