Fire destroys apartment building in Valparaiso; at least four people displaced

VALPARAISO — An older two-story residential building which housed multiple apartments was destroyed in a fire Wednesday night.

The Valparaiso Fire Department was called at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday to 8 Wayne St., said Robert Schulte, public information officer for the department.

Upon arrival, fire crews found fire showing from the rear of the building. Fire crews extinguished the initial fire showing, but due to the balloon construction of the home, the fire had moved to the attic of the building before it was extinguished. The home was a loss.

Firefighters remained on scene until 10:30 a.m Thursday.

Initial cause of the fire is not known, and an investigation will take place Thursday, Schulte said.

At least four people were displaced by the fire. Porter County Red Cross assisted two occupants with housing. Fire detectors were heard alarming when initial fire crews arrived.

The department is urging everyone to check their smoke detectors. A properly placed and maintained smoke detector can save lives, he said.
