VALPARAISO — John Bowker has announced plans to resign from his 5th District seat on the City Council at the end of the year, according to Porter County Republican Party Chairman Michael Simpson.

Bowker cited work responsibilities, and the addition of a grandchild, as preventing him from fulling committing to the council, Simpson said.

"He's enjoyed his time on the council, working with the citizens in his district and throughout the City and is proud of all that has been accomplished to make Valparaiso a destination for all," Simpson said in a prepared statement.

Bowker has been on the council for 13 years and has served on the Valparaiso Redevelopment Commission since 1995.

A replacement for Bowker will chosen during a caucus of precinct committee people from the 5th District at 7 p.m. Dec. 14 at the Porter County Administration Center, 155 Indiana Ave. in Valparaiso.

Anyone interested in seeking the seat can pick up an application at the Voter Registration office in the county administration center.
