ST. JOHN | The principal of Lake Central High School is on administrative leave with pay while district leaders investigate an incident involving him.

Robin Tobias, who has been principal since July 1, 2012, was placed on administrative leave Tuesday. Assistant Principal Sean Begley is acting principal.

Lake Central Assistant Superintendent Al Gandolfi said the move is a personnel matter.

"It's an investigative process," he said. "There are no conclusions yet. Our goal is to continue to prepare our students. It's a personnel-related matter."

Gandolfi said he couldn't say when the incident came to the attention of district leaders. However, he said it was not uncovered by the Indiana State Board of Accounts, which is responsible for conducting audits of a school district's finances.

"We will let the investigation play out. The school corporation and Mr. Tobias deserve that," Gandolfi said.

According to the contract posted on the district's website, Tobias earns $111,196 per year.

A 1994 graduate of Lake Central High, Tobias earned his bachelor’s degree from Wabash College, and his master’s in administration from Indiana State University. During his career, he has served as swim coach, English teacher, dean, athletic director and assistant principal in three districts: Lake Central, Munster and Plymouth.

Lake Central High has about 3,200 students in grades nine through 12. With Begley serving as acting principal, there are four assistant principals in the building.
