Try 3 months for $3

PORTAGE | It will be close, but an elevator should be installed in the community center by the time of this year's Senior Health Fair May 2.

The Portage Park Board on Monday approved a contract with Hasse Construction of Calumet City to construct an elevator in the building. The base bid cost is $239,000. The board also approved an alternative, the addition of a sump pump and drainage, at a cost of $5,700.

Hasse was the lowest of six bidders on the project and promised to have it completed in the shortest time frame, 98 days.

Other bidders, and their base prices were Gil Behling & Son at $249,000, Gariup Construction at $247,800, Gough, Inc. at $258,411, The Pangere Corp. at $281,509 and Semford Management at $249,880.

The elevator will be built as an addition to the two-story building on its north side. It is to be paid for from Redevelopment Commission funds. Construction could begin as early as Feb. 1.

In other business, the board reorganized for 2013, electing Ken Lorenz as president, Rich Piazza as vice president and Ruth Jones as secretary.

It also approved moving its February meeting to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 19 because of the Presidents Day holiday on its regular meeting date.
