Marijuana plant

Porter County police said they busted a small pot growing operation this week in the Salt Creek Commons subdivision located south of Portage.

Donald Phelps, 56, is accused of growing 20 marijuana plants in his backyard and shed, in addition to 15 plants in a bedroom closet on the lower level of the home in the 400 block of Sassafrass Drive.

The plants weighed in at 35 pounds, according to police.

Police said they also recovered four bags and a jar containing a little more than a half an ounce of marijuana.

Phelps is charged with felony counts of dealing in marijuana, possession of marijuana, maintaining a common nuisance and possession of cocaine or a narcotic drug.
