VALPARAISO — The city's redevelopment commission approved its second grant under the sign grant program for the year Wednesday afternoon.

Approved was a grant for Mark Miller, owner of 905 Calumet Ave. The present pole sign will be demolished and a monument sign added to identify tenants of the building.

Businesses are eligible for up to $10,000 through the program. Miller requested a total of $7,728 and will pay an additional $2,728 out-of-pocket for the project. The sign will be constructed by Steindler Signs for a total cost of $10,457.

The commission approved the sign grant policy in June to help fund the demolition of pole signs and construction of conforming signs along Calumet Avenue.

The grant program was funded with $50,000. A previous grant was approved for a property south of Miller's for a cost of $5,672, leaving $36,599 in the fund.
