Valparaiso University basketball player Micah Bradford was arrested Saturday night on charges including possession of marijuana.
Bradford, of Bourbonnais, Illinois, and Nailah Bush, of Chicago, both 19, were taken into custody after a 9:12 p.m. call to an apartment in the 200 block of Sturdy Road in Valparaiso.
They face felony counts of obstruction of justice and maintaining a common nuisance, and a misdemeanor drug count, according to Valparaiso police.
Police said when they entered the common area of the apartment building, they smelled burned marijuana. They could hear voices in the apartment in question, but said no one would answer the door.
After confirming the smell of marijuana using a police dog and obtaining a search warrant, police said they entered the apartment. Bradford and Bush claimed they had been sleeping and knew nothing about any marijuana use.
Police said they found a bedroom window open and two small baggies of marijuana on the ground just outside.
"The subjects appeared as if they were attempting to destroy or discard of any evidence that they possessed," according to police.
Bradford is a sophomore at the school and plays guard on the basketball team.
Valparaiso University spokeswoman Nicole Niemi declined comment on Bradford's arrest.
