LANSING, IL - Barbara J. Zachary (nee Busch), 77 of Lansing, IL, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, June 27, 2019. Barb was born on January 30, 1942 to Mollie and Conrad Busch. She married Raymond Zachary on December 23, 1960. They celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary in 2017. She was preceded in death by her husband Ray in June of 2018 and by her brother, Robert Busch and her parents. Surviving are her two daughters, Kimberly Zachary and Pamela (Patrick) Reel of Peoria.
Barb attended St. John's Lutheran School and graduated from Thornton Fractional South in 1960. She worked as a car hop at Dog 'n Suds and at the NIPSCO Gas Company before becoming a full-time mother and homemaker. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, a Sunday School teacher and a room mother who was also involved in the PTA at the school. She was a member of the Lansing Junior Women's Club.
A clean house was a priority to Barb and she did upkeep daily. Spring cleaning was an annual ritual. She was an avid reader and often took her children to the library, instilling in them a love of reading. In her "free" time, Barb liked to bike and to read while suntanning. She took pride in her red petunias she planted each year.
We would like to thank Deb Troca for being a good friend and styling her hair for over 30 years, right up to the very end. Barb followed her weekly schedule consistently. Being a regular customer every Tuesday, she had many friends at local businesses including First Savings Bank of Hegewisch, Howard's Meat Market and Strack and Van Til's, formerly Burgers. As a result of her love of reading, she was a weekly patron of the Lansing Public Library and often on the waiting list for new bestsellers.
Barb and her husband Ray and their children spent many fun holiday weekends at the Buehler's cottage in Michigan.

HOBART, IN - Howard W. "Howie" Popp, age 94, of Hobart passed away Monday, July 8, 2019 in his home. Howie was born June 7, 1925 in Merrillville, IN to the late Edward A. and Katharine (Stoltz) Popp. He retired from the Budd Company as a press operator. He also worked for Rees Funeral Home from 1962 until his retirement. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII.
Howie is survived by his four children, Howard L. Popp of Portage, Sharon Morris of Princeton, KY, Diane (Bob) McDaniels of Mesa, AZ and Donna Seeley of Hobart; his sister, Pat Kingery of Crown Point; eight grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Howie was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Dolores (Kasch) Popp; two grandchildren, Michael Howard and Andrea Popp; two brothers, Joseph Popp and Clarence Popp; three sisters, Dorothy Weaver, Geraldine Markle and Marie Blink.

MERRILLVILLE, IN - Ann Tomlin passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 with her family by her side. She is survived by her loving daughter, Carol A. Ann enjoyed spending time in her beautiful flower gardens and being a religious guide for people in need. Ann was a woman with many artistic abilities that she will be remembered for. She loved floral arranging, painting sewing and decorating. Ann was a loving mother, aunt and dear friend who will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.

PORTAGE, IN - Charles Douglas Gumm, age 79 of Portage, passed away on Monday, July 8, 2019. He was born on August 28, 1939 in Gary, IN to Douglas and Frances (Walker) Gumm. Charles lived his life in Northwest Indiana and was a 1960 graduate of Edison High School in Lake Station. Charles served his country in The United States Army from 1960 to 1964.
Charles is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Nancy (Slagley) Gumm; his Children, David (Miranda) Binkley, Patty (James) Bledsoe, Kim Clark, Denise (Michael) Arter, Andrew Clark; Brother, Lawrence (Pam) Gumm; Grandchildren, Amie, Candice, Stacey, Hillary, Mason, Abigail, Allison, Alexandra, Ethan, Jared, Olivia; seven great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Carol Wright, Alice Wiseman; and grandson, Nathan Bledsoe.
Charles was a man rich in relationships. He was a 50 year member of Operating Engineers Local #150. He was an active member of Crossroads Family Church in Portage. He was the creator of the "Charlie Special" at Starbucks and started every day with the daily crossword in The Times. He loved his dogs and nature and supported Veterans and environmental causes. Charles was a devoted family man. He loved Westerns and John Wayne.

Kent graduated from Kelly High School on the southwest side of Chicago. He was a jack of all trades kind of guy, with an inventive and artistic nature. He loved woodworking, art, music, and playing guitar in his band. Kent will be remembered for his creative, outgoing, unique, and charismatic personality. VALPARAISO, IN - Jack Gump, 78 of Valparaiso, passed away Friday, July 5, 2019. He was born May 1, 1941 in Green County, PA to Eugene and Amanda (Williams) Gump. Jack was a Veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving for four years, and worked as a machinist at U.S. Steel, retiring after 38 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 94 of Valparaiso, where Jack was a past commander and a member of the Color Guard. Jack was also member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Valparaiso.
On June 14, 1965 in Winchester, VA, Jack married Sandra Snyder who survives along with their daughters, Jenny Gump and Merry (Roland) DeMass; granddaughters, Cara (Mike) DeMass and Erika DeMass; great granddaughter, Lorelei McChellan; sister, Patricia (Richard) VanTassell; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Peg Flynn.

PORTAGE, IN - Gary E. Yates "Crackerjack", age 67, of Portage, passed away Monday, July 8, 2019. He was born on November 6, 1951 in Fairmont, West Virginia to the late William Leonard and Wilda Yates. On August 3, 1975, in Griffith, IN he married Linda Sola. Gary retired from LTV Steel where he worked as a laborer. He was a huge fan of Elvis Presley and enjoyed collecting memorabilia. He enjoyed fishing, spending time with his grandchildren, working in the yard and especially traveling with his wife to different Army bases to visit their daughter. He will always be remembered as a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to those who love him.

HAMMOND, IN - Donna Sue Bewley, age 59, of Hammond, entered into eternal life suddenly on July 4, 2019 in Sarasota, FL.
Donna was a lifetime resident of the region, born and raised in Hammond. She recently retired from School City of Hammond after over 30 years as a Physical Education Teacher. Donna was proud to be a second-generation teacher at Irving School. Her students affectionately knew her as Ms. B. VALPARAISO, IN - Michael Barton Hettich, 76, of Valparaiso, passed away Sunday, June 30, 2019 in his home following an extended illness. He was born February 13, 1943, in Cook County, IL, to the late Edward and Mildred (Stelter) Hettich.
Michael honorably served his country in the United States Army. He was a graduate of Valparaiso University and was a postal carrier for the United States Postal Service for 20 plus years. After retiring, he was an avid NASCAR fan, video game enthusiast and enjoyed keeping tropical fish. Michael was a loving husband and step father.
On November 9, 1991, in Chicago, IL, he married Joyce (Livesay) Hettich, who preceded him in death.
Also preceding him in death were his parents.
Surviving are his step son, Kevin Brown of Valparaiso; step daughters, April (Mike) Millhouse of Hobart and Heather (Rick) Hendricks of Valparaiso; numerous step grandsons and granddaughters; and many friends.

VALPARAISO, IN - Halford Leon Wells, 82 of Valparaiso, passed away Sunday, July 7, 2019. He was born April 9, 1937 in Harlin County, KY, the son of James and Monett (Sheperd) Wells. He was a Electrician Tech at McGill Manufacturing, and a member of Liberty Bible Church. He married Geneva June (Poynter) Wells, who preceded him in death on October 12, 2008.
Surviving are his children, James L. (Mary E.) Wells of Valparaiso, Kathleen R. Downey of Pensacola, FL, and Cynthia (Gregory) Rogers of Valparaiso; six grandchildren: Michael Avery, James Wells II, Brent Downey, Ryan Downey, Timothy Rogers, and Adam Rogers. Halford was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Jennifer Lynn Wells, and granddaughter Jessica Wells, and two brothers, David and Paul Wells.
He loved to fish, garden, and spend time with his grandchildren. He loved to travel and go to his grandchildren's sporting events, especially football. He was an avid Cubs fan and was watching Cross Town Classic when he passed.

VALPARAISO, IN - Kathryn Jean Cody, 91 of Valparaiso, passed away Sunday, July 7, 2019. She was born October 5, 1927 in Boone Grove to the late Lester and Mildred (Upp) Douglas. Katie graduated from Boone Grove High School and was a member of the First Christian Church in Valparaiso. She enjoyed sewing, painting, knitting, her dogs, and camping and traveling with her husband. On June 22, 1947 in Boone Grove, Katie married James C. Cody, who preceded her in death in 2010.
She is survived by their daughter, Lynn (Michael) Kinsey of Valparaiso; grandchildren: Douglas Kinsey, Caryn (Craig) Beougher; great-granddaughters: Katelynn and Kenzie; and brother-in-law, Harry Cody.

HAMMOND, IN - Miguel Salas, 92, of Hammond, IN and McAllen, TX, passed away peacefully at the Community Hospital in Munster, IN on July 4, 2019. He was born in Edroy, TX to Federico and Enriquita (Martinez) Salas on September 29, 1926. On February 14, 1952 he married the love of his life, Phyllis (Gomez) and she survives. He is also survived by his children, Hector Jesus Salas, Rosa Maria (Pedro) Rodriguez, Jose Luis (Kim) Salas, Ricardo (Millie) Salas, Edwardo (Laura) Salas; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; siblings, Ofelia Garza and Alfredo Salas; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Federico and Enriquita Salas; and siblings, Jesus Salas, Pedro Salas, Enrique Salas, Leonor Gomez, Tomasa Garza , Matilde Posada.
Miguel proudly served in the U. S. Army and worked at Inland Steel for 37 years in the #2 and #3 Blast Furnace until his retirement. He was a lifelong member in good standing of USW Local 1010 and the American Legion Post 508. He was also a longtime member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in East Chicago.

PORTAGE, IN - Ryan Jacob Woods, age 39 of Portage, passed away on Sunday, July 7, 2019. He was born on August 21, 1979 in Crown Point, IN to Larry and Linda (Klemoff) Woods.
He was a graduate of Portage High School, class of 1998. He played basketball in Jr. High for Portage. He worked for a blacktop and asphalt company. He loved Harleys, the Packers, Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, and his loving family, especially his daughter Kiara. He was a complete jokester, he always made everyone laugh and loved to be around family. Ryan is survived by his parents, Linda and Larry Woods; sister, Trisha Pendergrass; his daughter, Kiara Woods; his nephews, Mason and Ethan Pendergrass; and his aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Nova Woods, Elmer and Albertina Klemoff.
He will be dearly missed by everyone who knew him and loved him.

CALUMET CITY, IL - Evelyn Mazurkiewicz (nee Arent), age 96, of Calumet City, IL passed away on Friday, July 5, 2019 after a long, fulfilled life. Evelyn loved traveling, shopping and spending time with her friends and family. After 45 years as a store manager at Mademoiselle, Evelyn retired to care for her loving husband, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Barbara Jean (nee Brough) Absher, 92, passed away peacefully in her Melbourne home on June 19, 2019. Loving wife of the late Leroy "Roy" Absher (married 67 years) and devoted mother of Tom (Pam) of Alamo, CA; Dan (Candy) of Melbourne Beach, FL; Jeff (Eileen) of Phoenixville, PA; and Amy (John) of Reston, VA. Barbara was also the loving grandmother of ten grandchildren. Barbara was predeceased by her sister Phyllis West and brother Donald Brough.
Barbara was extremely proud of her Scotch-Irish heritage and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She was the first person you would call if you had tickets to Chicago Cubs or Chicago Bulls, or the Indiana Hoosier Basketball games. She not only loved sports but loved to cook, play cards and most of all spend time with family members. Some of her fondest memories were the times the family and friends met at the family cottage at Shavehead Lake in Michigan. Barbara was also one of 25 high school lady friends that got together each month for "Club" a tradition that went on for over 40 years. Barbara had a wonderful sense of humor and was a great entertainer that made everyone feel welcome at any gathering. She will be deeply missed.
Barbara spent most of her life in Northwest Indiana, retiring with her husband Roy to Florida six years ago.
A burial service will be held in her honor this September at the Calumet Park Funeral Chapel and Cemetery in Merrillville, IN.
Luster (Bud) Hursey 89, of Mundelein, IL, died on July 7th.Bud was born in East Gary, IN on May 28, 1930, to Solomon Luster and Lillian (Collar). He is survived by the love of his life, Lois (Basetich) of 40 years, his children Sue (Dave) Perry, Jon, Kevin (Diane), Robin, Joe (Carlota), Kip (Betty) and Aimee Warner. He was preceded in death by his son, Kevin, parents, siblings Otto Ray and Wilma (Good). Also survived by 20 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
1992 was an important year for Bud as he retired from work and as the Lake Station Fire Chief, after volunteering for 38 years.
Family was most important to Bud and he played Santa Claus every Christmas for kids big and small.
A Celebration of Life will be planned for a later date.
