GARY | A 15-year-old charged with murder in the shooting death of a Merrillville teen may be tried as an adult, Lake County prosecutor's office said Monday.
Keon Moten, 15, was charged with murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery and criminal recklessness, the prosecutor's office said.
Gary police Cmdr. Samuel Roberts said police presented the charges to the prosecutor's office Monday, and the suspect was transported to the Lake County Juvenile Center in Crown Point. The prosecutor's office said it will push for Moten to be tried as an adult.
Police said Moten fatally shot Anthony White, 16, on Sunday morning outside of a gas station at the intersection of 49th Avenue and Broadway in Gary following a fight. Police said Moten also shot and injured three other people outside the gas station.
White was pronounced dead of a gunshot wound to the head at 2:49 a.m. at Methodist Hospital Northlake Campus in Gary, the Lake County coroner's office reported.
White was a junior at Merrillville High School, Principal Mike Krutz said.
Krutz said he heard of the situation Sunday night and made arrangements to set up the school's crisis team for grieving students Monday. He said students were allowed to go to the school's guidance office to speak with social workers about the situation.
"That's a terrible, devastating situation," Krutz said. "We're going to come together to try and get through it."
Police said the incident began at The Flava, a club on Broadway just south of the shooting scene, but weren't certain if the club was involved. Club owners could not be reached for comment Monday.
An officer in Gary's juvenile division said police couldn't release additional information on the suspect -- including Moten's hometown -- because he is a juvenile. The case remained under investigation Monday, police said.
