Advice for new State Board of Education

It's no secret in Indiana that there has been tension between Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz and the State Board of Education. 

The Indiana General Assembly stripped Ritz of her automatic chairmanship of the board, but it also required a shakeup in the board. Senate Enrolled Act 1 reconstituted the board and changed its composition.

Northwest Indiana's new representative, Eddie Melton, is manager of federal governmental relations and community relations at NIPSCO. Melton replaces Gary attorney Tony Walker on the board.

We asked Melton and Valparaiso Community Schools Superintendent E. Ric Frataccia to offer their visions for the board.

The new board is scheduled to meet Wednesday. Today, we present the columns by Melton and Frataccia.
