pumpkin wreck

A pumpkin crashed through a driver's side windshield, directly hitting a woman and causing shattered glass to cut her face, Indiana State Police said.

A pumpkin thrown off an overpass caused a 64-year-old woman to crash into a ditch on the Indiana Toll Road as the gourd rocketed through her windshield.

This was the worst and third incident involving a pumpkin on the Toll Road this month, Indiana State Police said.

The pumpkin crashed through the driver's side windshield, directly hitting the woman and causing shattered glass to cut her face, Sgt. Ted Bohner of Indiana State Police said.

“We're so lucky it was something like a pumpkin and not something like a rock or she could have easily have been killed,” Boehner said. “This could have turned out to be tragic.”

The incident happened around 9:35 p.m. Tuesday on the Indiana Toll Road in LaPorte County at mile marker 44, about five miles east of the Michigan City exit.

The Michigan woman was driving eastbound when the pumpkin was thrown off of the N. Goldring Road overpass, causing her to crash into a ditch, police said.

Bohner said this marks the third incident since Nov. 7 where a pumpkin has caused calamity on the roads. The past two incidents caused damage to vehicles with no injuries, according to Boehner.

One happened previously at the North Goldring Road overpass while another happened nearby. All three incidents happened between 8:45 p.m. and midnight.

“Throwing objects from an overpass can cause injuries as well as death,” Boehner said. “Anyone caught committing this crime can be charged with criminal mischief, a misdemeanor, or overpass mischief, a felony, if the victim sustains injuries.”

Indiana State Police are asking anyone with information to call Trooper Trent Jones at 574-206-2931.
