Tens of thousands of spectators and re-enactors from throughout the world visited Appomattox Court House National Historical Park on Thursday to commemorate the anniversary of the effective end to America's bloodiest war.

The Times columnist Marc Chase is in Appomattox, Va., through Saturday, chronicling the re-enactment activities that honor the 150th anniversary of the historic event.

He also will be portraying a 19th century journalist, covering the participation of Northwest Indiana re-enactors of the 20th Indiana Infantry on Friday and Saturday, filing live Tweets, Facebook posts, photos and daily stories as if the actual events were unfolding.
