GARY — A family awoke around midnight Monday to shots being fired into their home located in the 1600 block of Georgia Street. 

Virgil M. Johnson, 34, of Gary, was charged Tuesday with six counts of criminal recklessness. He was being held on a $120,000 bond in Gary City Jail. 

After police were called to the first shooting, the woman and her family began preparing to leave to seek safety when a red beam was pointed at her chest.

Johnson was heard cursing at the woman while threatening to kill her, according to the affidavit. The red beam was coming from a gun Johnson was allegedly holding.

Witnesses told police that Johnson fired at the woman and her family several times as they drove away, according to court records. He then got into his car and chased them down the block. 

The family, which included minors, eventually met with a Gary officer after calling for help for a second time that morning. There were two bullet holes in the woman's vehicle, according to court records.
