GARY | DNA results identified a woman found Oct. 19 in the 2200 block of Massachusetts Street as Tracy L. Martin, 41, of Gary, according to the Lake County coroner's office.

The body was found in an area near where other alleged victims of accused killer Darren Vann were found in October. Vann allegedly confessed to killing seven women, six of whom were found in abandoned homes in Gary.

Vann, 43, of Gary, is charged in the strangling deaths of Anith Jones, 35, of Merrillville, and Afrikka Hardy, 19.

While Vann allegedly confessed to killing five other women in addition to Jones and Hardy, he has not been charged in those deaths. He led detectives in October to the bodies of six women, including Jones, in four abandoned homes in Gary.

Two of the other women previously identified are Teaira Batey, 28, and Kristine Williams, 36, both of Gary. Officials are working to identify the other women and a DNA sample from at least one of the victims was sent to the Indiana State Police laboratory last year.

Gary Police spokesman Sgt. Thomas Decanter said a gag order had been issued by the court in the Vann case and he could not comment when contacted regarding the release sent out Friday by the Lake County coroner's office. The release said Martin was identified based on test results from the state police lab.

During a court appearance last month, Lake Criminal Judge Diane Boswell also granted the state's request for a DNA mouth swab from Vann over his attorney's objection.

Vann's next court hearing is scheduled for Feb. 13.
