WHITING | Turon Cummings may have a bright future with a food truck serving his creamy, meaty Conewich Breadcones based on the reaction of some members of The Times newsroom who were enamored with the unique concoction he was serving at this year's Pierogi Fest.

WHITING | Of course pierogi are king at Pierogi Fest. Crowds jam 119th Street in the Little City by the Lake, looking for their favorite vendor, looking for the shortest line or looking for something a little out of the ordinary, like alligator-stuffed pierogi.

A jury has convicted a man of first-degree murder in the 2016 slayings of six members of a Chicago family who were slaughtered in their home. Wednesday's verdict means that 28-year-old Diego Uribe Cruz will be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. During the trial, prosecutors told the jury that Uribe Cruz came to the house where members of his family lived to commit a robbery and killed everyone there _ including two young boys _ to make sure there were no witnesses. Evidence included DNA under his aunt's fingernails that prosecutors said belonged to Uribe Cruz.

Chicago police say an officer shot an armed man who was making anti-police statements inside a police station. Superintendent David Brown says the shooting happened Wednesday afternoon at the Ogden District station. He says the man holding what appeared to be a gun wrapped in a plastic bag entered the station and made negative comments about police. Officers ordered him to drop the weapon but he refused and pointed it at them. Then officers opened fire, shooting him once in the shoulder. He is expected to survive. Last week, an officer shot a man who climbed a fire escape to enter another Chicago police station and pointed a gun at officers.

The Herald Republican of Angola reports that she was charged in Saturday night’s accident along a Steuben County road that killed 13-year-old Wayden Bennett, 13, of Angola, and left 12-year-old Ryly Cumings, 12, of Angola, with a head laceration.
