GUEST COMMENTARY: Mrvan vowing to serve Region's less fortunate

I am running for Congress to create good-paying jobs and a Northwest Indiana economy that works for everyone.

As North Township Trustee, I have spent 15 years helping people find a good-paying job. My experience has focused on working to identify federal, state, local, private and nonprofit resources that allow Northwest Indiana residents to get a good-paying job, take care of their family, and succeed in a career that allows them to have a good quality of life.

As Congressman, I will use my years of experience to continue to work with all stakeholders to create more economic opportunities for everyone and help retain and attract investments to Indiana’s 1st Congressional District.

I am running for Congress to advocate for the health of people - including the most vulnerable in our society, the elderly, our children and the veterans community.

I have seen the challenges that face individuals and families who lack the resources for adequate health care. One of my main priorities as the Representative for Indiana’s 1st Congressional District will be to improve access to affordable health care options.

My trustee office has represented and advocated on behalf of thousands of people who came into my office struggling to secure access to quality health care, pay their rent, keep the lights and heat on and take care of basic family necessities.

I know firsthand the struggles of vulnerable individuals in our Region, including the elderly who need assistance paying for prescription drugs, children who have been victims of sexual exploitation and veterans who need mental health services.

As Congressman, I will continue to be a trusted and dependable resource for all those in need.

I am running for Congress to fight for organized labor.

An economy that works for everyone and has good-paying job opportunities starts with organized labor.

When the times get tough, I have walked the line with the proud men and women of organized labor on countless occasions, including when the USW was striking at BP and at U.S. Steel. My office also is currently helping all current steelworkers impacted by the recent slowdown and layoffs. Organized labor has been instrumental in giving workers a stronger voice for fair pay for the work they do, safer working environments and a more secure retirement.

As Congressman, I will continue to fight for the strength and dignity of all workers and organized labor by supporting collective bargaining rights, Davis-Bacon prevailing wage requirements, and strong Buy America protections. American workers must be able to compete on a level playing field in our global economy, and our U.S. trade laws must be fully enforced.

I am running for Congress because I am a public servant and want to continue to bring communities together to grow our economy and create a more prosperous future for all.

I learned at a very early age from my father that public service is one of the highest and noblest professions. As a public servant, one is capable of dedicating all of their focus into bringing people together and positively impacting their community, state and country.

I am proud of all of my accomplishments I have achieved as North Township Trustee, including working with state officials and local school corporations to support victims of sexual exploitation through the No More Secrets program. I am proud to have been able to listen to the stories and challenges of over 175,000 constituents on a daily basis and be able to help them find resources during their times of need.

As Congressman, I will continue to use these skills and experiences for our entire Region and and work with other public officials, state and federal agencies and nonprofit advocacy organizations to find solutions to the challenges facing our Region and create a more prosperous Northwest Indiana economy for everyone.

In summary, I am asking for the consideration of Northwest Indiana residents to be the Representative for the 1st Congressional District of Indiana so that I can:

• Fight to create good-paying jobs and an economy that works for everyone;

• Support affordable health care options and advocate on behalf of our elderly, our children, our veterans;

• Defend the strength and dignity of organized labor and all workers.

• Continue to be a public servant and bring Northwest Indiana communities together to grow our economy and create a more prosperous future for all.
