A major online travel company is reporting what many in the Region already know: Chesterton is a great place to escape the daily grind and find adventure.
The Porter County town recently made Expedia's "Best Place to Escape to in Every State" list.
It's a boon for Chesterton, and our entire Region, as the national travel and planning company recognizes some of Northwest Indiana's best tourism assets.
The picturesque outdoor camping and hiking at Indiana Dunes State Park, the natural beauty surrounding At Home in the Woods Bed and Breakfast and the amenities of The Denali Tree House all make Chesterton stand out as an "escape" destination in the United States, Expedia reported.
Chesterton leaders and residents should be proud of this rating.
Our entire Region also should be mindful of what it can mean to Northwest Indiana's tourism fortunes.
This area abounds with tourism assets similar to what Chesterton offers, including Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and its public beaches spanning several cities and towns.
The Dunes are on the cusp of greater things as Congress debates providing the lakeshore with a full designation as a national park.
Such a designation, already approved by the U.S. House of Representatives, could be another game-changing way of putting our Region more indelibly on the tourism map.
Ensuring that we're developing businesses and infrastructure, including lakeshore dining and adequate beach and lakeshore parking, that bolster our greatest tourism strengths also is key.
To sell ourselves as a destination to the outside world, we must work to ensure our best attractions aren't some best-kept secret — and that they're accessible.
