Two different Porter County fundraisers within the past week deserve praise for marrying a showcase of culinary talent with the needs of neighbors within the community.

The South County Love Your Neighbor Cook-Off at the Porter County Expo Center in Valparaiso last weekend brought together nine teams of amateur chefs to cook barbecue favorites in a benefit for Morgan Township and Kouts schools and fire departments.

Another event at the same venue Thursday, Chefs Around the Table, brought in 82 chefs who served about 600 dinners and raised more than $89,000 for Our Greater Good, a Porter County organization that seeks to strengthen families and prevent substance abuse.

Both charity events represented optimal use of the public grounds of the Porter County Expo Center to help fill real social needs.

Most of us are aware of the scourge of opiate addiction and overdose deaths facing our Region, state and nation.

Many also are aware of the ever-present need for school funding and for bolstering the resources of our first responders.

Together, the two culinary events found a way to bring the joy of food and cooking to participants and spectators while responding to these pressing social and financial needs.
