The state of Indiana, for the year 2018, has added an annual "supplemental fee" for the licensing of hybrid and electric vehicles.

The fee is $150 for electric vehicles and $50 for hybrid vehicles. This is the same BMV that will sell you an "environmental" license plate for a special fee.

Those of us who own electric and or hybrid vehicles will pay the tax (it's not really a fee) for not buying as much gas and generating as much tailpipe pollutants as others.

Did our elected officials consider that discouraging people from driving hybrids or electric vehicles affects the air that the children and all Hoosiers breathe on a daily basis?

Perhaps they should give a license plate "credit" for those who drive carbureted V8 engine cars that run on leaded gasoline the get 8 MPG because they will generate far more gasoline tax income for the state than hybrid or electric vehicle owners.

I will remember this "supplemental fee" when I drive my plug-in hybrid to the polling place next time we vote.
