To some folks, the word “socialism” is falsely synonymous with “communism,” which means "bad."

Even though socialism has functioned quite well in Europe and elsewhere for more than a century, many would be surprised it has functioned well in the good old USA too.

Socialism is defined as public collective ownership or control with the avowed aim of operating for use rather than for profit. Most fire and police departments, street departments, sewage treatment plants, public libraries and parks and much more are thus examples of socialism.

It is great Porter County’s Memorial Opera House is generating some revenue, but having the 124-year-old architectural gem in our midst, with or without a profit, provides social value, and I believe should be supported by taxpayers.

The Memorial Opera House Foundation is deserving of much public gratitude for going beyond tax support in order to protect our past and to provide purpose for present and future citizens.
