“It's like handing out overtime to employees who chatted in the break room all afternoon.”

That’s how the end of session of the Indiana General Assembly was described in the IndyStar, after a chaotic close where multiple home run bills were completely whiffed.

We frequently bemoan our dysfunctional and gridlocked U.S. Congress, and we need only look to our own Statehouse to see the legislative malpractice up close.

As a CASA volunteer, I was infuriated that the state yet again took a pass on adequately funding the Department of Child Services and decided that funding school safety measures, in the wake of the Parkland and Maryland school shootings (the latter in which a lone, armed school resource officer heroically saved lives), took a back seat to saluting retiring members and patting themselves on the back for an incomplete job well done.
