To me, a retired Gary teacher with almost 25 years experience, state Sen. Karen Tallian's letter is hateful Democratic partisanship and fear-mongering.
My Gary students experienced conditions worse than in the Third World. We had no toilet paper, no warm water, no copier paper — I bought my own and made copies at home because the printers didn't work — no workbooks and no textbooks.
I usually had to write lessons on the board, the way it is done in most underdeveloped nations. My children sweltered during hot weather because the air conditioning never worked (except for main office buildings), and the worst, and most egregious condition, was no heat during October, November and December 2016 at Pulaski. I had to bring my own heaters just to get my classroom to 50 degrees. My church, Southlake Worship Center, brought coats to those who needed them.
The Gary school boards through the years have abused the public trust and the students whom they were supposed to help.
The takeover by the state of Indiana is a welcome change best understood by someone who has seen or experienced the abuse and neglect firsthand.
