I propose an alternative to making the federal "gas guzzler" tax more stringent — a commuter tax on any vehicle driven more than 10 miles to work.
The savings in commuting time would provide more time for the family, involvement in the community and still allow people to drive SUVs and pickups.
The increased ability to be involved in the community and family could result in lower taxes, less crime, a better quality of life and less traffic congestion.
Forty years ago, I moved close enough that I could ride my bicycle to work, emitting zero pollution and saving energy when I did.
