Merrillville firefighters arrived in the neighborhood to find a two-story house with heavy flames coming from the roof of an attached garage.
The mayor has named Damon T. Carpenter as the city’s newest fire chief.
Crews were met with heavy flames and smoke, with the back side of the home engulfed, the chief said.
In addition to Merrillville firefighters, crews from Lake Hills, Lake Ridge, Hobart, New Chicago, Crown Point, Lakes of the Four Seasons and St. John responded to provide aid.
The crash involved a vehicle that collided into two parked vehicles.
The driver was trapped inside the van after a three-vehicle crash took place at about 1:30 p.m. Monday, Munster Fire Department Chief Dave Pelc said.
There were no injuries in the early morning pub fire, firefighters said.
When firefighters arrived, flames were jutting though the roof. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
After a funeral service Saturday morning, there will be a procession of first responders that will travel from St. Matthias Parish through the Lake County Fairgrounds and around the Crown Point square.
The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff's Department.
