Pierogi Fest, which began in 1993, draws an estimated 300,000 people to the city annually each July. No small feat for a city of approximately 5,000 residents.

The annual Sunday highlights from Pierogi Fest included the best vendor award, pierogi toss and pierogi eating contest.
This was the first time the entire fest had an evacuation, said Pierogi Fest chairman and co-founder Tom Dabertin.
“It shows this community coming together and that Whiting is one big family.”
It's only a day before Whiting becomes pierogi paradise.
Pierogi Fest is still looking for food vendors, volunteers and parade marchers this year.
The Pierogi Fest Polka Parade will will take a different route this years as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, stopping short of the festival's entrance.
Mr. Pierogi, Miss Paczki, the Precision Lawnmower Drill Team, and various floats will roll down 119th Street, delighting the crowd. Pierogi Fest organizers are inviting people to apply for the chance to march in the parade.
