Novak Djokovic can return to the U.S. Open this year after missing the tournament in 2022 because the federal government's COVID-19 vaccination mandate for foreign air travelers ends next week. A spokesman for the U.S. Tennis Association says the group looks forward to welcoming the 22-time Grand Slam champion back. The White House says most of the last remaining federal COVID-19 vaccine requirements will disappear May 11, when the national public health emergency for the coronavirus ends. The U.S. Open begins in August. Djokovic has missed several key events because he decided not to get inoculated.

A bill pending in the California legislature would require schools to notify parents that their kids are expected to be vaccinated for HPV before entering eighth grade, as part of a push to get more children inoculated against the cancer-causing strains of the virus, theoretically before they become sexually active.

As government officials close the book on the emergency phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, health authorities are turning their attention to the next chapter of the vaccination campaign.

A federal mandate for health care workers to get vaccinated against COVID-19 has been in place nationally for a year. An Associated Press analysis has identified about 750 nursing homes and 110 hospitals nationwide that have been cited for violations.
