The refurbished track is just the start of a renovation of West Side's athletic facilities, which also will include an artificial turf football field.
“We want our youth to know that we are protecting them and if you have a dream to go play ball, it’s not really a dream anymore with us coming home. We just want you to know that it is possible."
With the coaching carousel shuffling around, West Side's Jalen Washington recently received a scholarship offer from several Power Five schools. His teammate also signed his commitment.
"I'm just happy, you know? Because basketball has always been my big dream. It's very surreal for me. ... When I lost my grandma in eighth grade and my pops in eighth grade, it really changed my whole mindset."
Both seniors had at least Division I scholarship offer, but with the college basketball world in flux because of the coronavirus pandemic, they've decided to attend Don Bosco Institute in Crown Point.
