Scouting the 2010 Calumet College of St. Joseph baseball team

Who's back: Huge vacancies remain for CCSJ in the wake of the loss of two of 2009's top hitters, Chris Kopp and Ryan Young. However, Morton product Jon Chance, who led the team in hitting at .345, is back along with new infield starters. Chance also will lead the pitching staff along with Nick Bolda (Lowell), who had four complete games last year. Seniors Ben Stepanian (Lake Central) and Kenny Segal (T.F. South) also hope to bolster the team.

Who's new: The Crimson Wave will have a slew of new starters at various positions, including shortstop and third base. Freshman infielder Luke Boersma joins the team after a successful career at perennial power Illiana Christian. Head coach Tony Myszak will have a tough decision to make, as he has three new catchers this spring in Anthony Soto, Louis Angeles and Ramon Griffith.

Outlook: The Wave will find out what they're made of quickly after their Winter Haven spring break outing, because seven of their conference foes finished with 25 wins or more. If they are going to be successful, they have to come out victorious in games with Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference cellar-dwellers Trinity Christian and Cardinal Stritch, who finished with a combined record of 21-76.
