Green Bay women break out to early lead in win over VU

Sarah Eichler buried a 3-pointer just 16 seconds into the game and visiting Green Bay never gave up the lead in a 78-55 Horizon League win over Valparaiso.

The first-place Phoenix (15-2, 5-0) led by as many as 15 points in the first half (24-9) against the Crusaders (7-11, 2-3).

"We pressed at times and we couldn't get over the hump," VU coach Tracey Dorow said in media release. "For us, it is going to take everyone playing at the top of their game to be a good team like Green Bay."

Gina Lange was the lone VU player in double figures with 18 points. She was 7-of-10 from the field, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range. Lange scored 12 of her points in the second half, fueling a 11-2 run to close the deficit to 41-33 with 15:18 remaining.

"We bounced back and responded very well," Dorow said. "We all know basketball is a game of spurts, and we did a really good job for that stretch."

Green Bay answered back with a 16-2 run to put the game on ice.

The Phoenix finished 28-of-47 (59.6 percent) from the field, while VU was 20-of-53 (37.7 percent).

Adrian Ritchie led the Phoenix with 15 points. Breannah Ranger added 13 points, while Eichler and Lydia Bauer each had 11.

Tabitha Gerardot, who scored 33 in Thursday's win at Milwaukee, was 3-of-10 from the field against Green Bay and finished with eight points.
