THE TIMES FOOTBALL TOP 10: WEEK 9
Last week: 1 | Overall record: 7-1 | Conference record: 4-0
A home win against Highland on Friday gives the 59ers the outright Northwest Crossroads Conference title. The offense continues to roll. Andrean has won six straight games and scored at least 36 points in its last five wins. Tyler Thomas had five receptions for 110 yards and two scores in the 36-15 win over Lowell last week.
Last week: 2 | Overall record: 6-2 | Conference record: 6-0
Another week, another stellar defensive effort for the Vikings. Valpo held Portage to 130 total yards of offense in last week's 17-7 win. The Vikings have already sewn up a share of the Duneland Athletic Conference title. A win over Lake Central on Friday will give Valpo the outright crown.
Last week: 3 | Overall record: 8-0 | Conference record: 6-0
Nino Barbosa put on a show in last week's 50-0 win over Bowman Academy. Barbosa had two rushing touchdowns, a receiving touchdown and a kick return for another score. He also threw a two-point conversion pass and was 6-of-6 in PAT kicks. The Oilers face River Forest on Friday. A win will probably secure a tie for the GSSC crown with Griffith. Whiting defeated Griffith 30-6 in Week 2. According to Whiting athletics director Tyler Tampier, league games are only recognized for weeks 3 through 9.
4. Michigan City
Last week: 4 | Overall record: 6-2 | Conference record: 5-1
No last-minute heroics this time around for the Wolves. Michigan City, which lost 58-56 to LaPorte in the regular season last year, crushed the Slicers 52-8 last Friday. Lyric McFarrin rushed 19 times for 235 yards and three scores against the Slicers. A win against Crown Point on Friday coupled with a Valparaiso loss would earn Michigan City a share of the DAC title.
Last week: 6 | Overall record: 7-1 | Conference record: 3-1
Talk about your postseason tuneups. The Brickies face Lowell in NCC play. Hobart has recovered from its loss to Andrean by outscoring opponents 108-32 during a three-game winning streak.
Last week: 7 | Overall record: 5-3 | Conference record: 4-2
A win over Chesterton would put a positive spin on an up-and-down regular season. The Pirates have outscored opponents 194-146 this season.
Last week: 5 | Overall record: 6-2 | Conference record: 3-1
The Red Devils received good news about cornerback Shawn Mooney. Mooney was thought to have been seriously injured in last Friday's loss against Andrean. The athletic department released a statement Saturday that Mooney was expected to make a full recovery. The Red Devils face Hobart on Friday. If Andrean loses Friday, the winner in the Lowell-Hobart matchup would gain a share of the NCC title.
Last week: 8 | Overall record: 6-2 | Conference record: 6-0
The Panthers steamrolled Lake Station 55-0 last Friday. A win over Hanover Central on Friday should give Griffith a share of the GSSC title. Griffith has scored at least 29 points during its six-game winning streak.
Last week: 10 | Overall record: 6-2 | Conference record: 4-0
The Governors can clinch the outright Great Lakes Athletic Conference title with a win -- or a Gavit loss. Morton has scored at least 25 points during its five-game winning streak.
