Participating teams: Boone Grove, Chesterton, Crown Point, Hobart, Lake Central, LaPorte, Lowell, Merrillville, Michigan City, Portage and Valparaiso.

Advancement: The top six places in each event and in the all-around advance to the regional. All gymnasts who receive the score of the sixth-place gymnast at the previous state finals meet advance to the regional (vault – 9.675; bars – 9.575; beam – 9.425; floor – 9.475; all-around – 37.725). The top three teams also advance.

Defending champion: Valparaiso.

Favorite: Chesterton. Darkhorse: Valparaiso.

Fast facts: Ranked No. 1 in the state, Chesterton comes in with the highest score of the season (114.175) and is the clear threat to No. 2 Valparaiso's run of 13 straight sectional crowns. ... The Trojans last sectional title came in 2003, the last time Valparaiso hasn't won the sectional. Valpo has the most sectional championships in state history with 24. ... Merrillville's Heather Osorio is the defending champ on bars, scoring a school-record 9.825 in 2016. ... Merrillville's last team crown came in 1992, while Crown Point and Michigan City are still aiming for their first in school history.
