LANSING | How good of a start did Illiana Christian get off to Friday night in their duel with Timothy Christian?
Jack Hillegonds hit two 3-pointers in the first quarter to help the Vikings sprint out to a 16-4 lead after one quarter. As the lead grew bigger, the Illiana student section, known as the "Loud Crowd," threw in a final bit of commentary on the night's proceedings, yelling "You can't stop us."
Come to think of it, no one has been able to stop Illiana Christian this season as the Vikings won decisively over Timothy Christian 60-31, led by Chandler Kimmel's game-high 14 points.
Despite the 29-point win, Vikings coach Grant Sikkema says their are still some things his team can improve on.
"We play down hill, we play fast, but we really need to work on rotating on defense and we really focused on that this week," Sikkema said. "Playing defense is something we have not done well up to this point. We worked on that and the results showed today."
Illiana (5-0) held Timothy Christian to single-digit scoring in the first and third quarters while shooting lights out throughout the game, led by Hilldegonds who hit four of his teams eight 3-pointers for the game. As for Kimmel, it wasn't just his offense that carried the Vikings to victory.
"He hustles, he's a great kid to have on the team," Sikkema said. "He was one of the reasons we were so successful on defense tonight. He's definitely one of the guys we rely on to bring the energy and to be the leader on the floor."
Sam Vree added eight points for the Vikings, while Bo Hofstra added seven.
