Lake Station's Dominique Smith has been named an Indiana Basketball Coaches Association/Subway Player of the Week after leading the Eagles to a pair of wins. The 5-foot-8 junior guard had 22 points and three steals in a 66-56 victory over Wheeler, then posted 30 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and five steals as the Eagles (4-1) topped North Newton 75-67. Smith hit 21 of 39 shots in the games.

Valparaiso girls to hold Meet the Vikes Night: The Valparaiso girls basketball team will hold a "Meet the Vikes Night" on Friday in the main gym. The JV game begins at 5:30 p.m. and varsity game at 7 p.m.

Admission for VCS students in grades K through five will be free with paying adult. There will be a varsity autograph session immediately following the varsity game. Each participant will receive an autographed varsity team photo and spirit beads (quantities are limited).

Wheeler 'Hoosiers' tickets on sale: Tickets for the Wheeler holiday tourney at the 'Hoosiers' gym in Knightstown are on sale at the high school. Cost is $15 for three games.


IFCA announces region awards: IFCA District 1 coaches selected four colleagues for coach of the year honors.

In Class A-3A, the award went to Dan Kukulski of Boone Grove. His Wolves went 8-4 and reached the sectional final.

Lowell's Keith Kilmer earned the Class 4A award. The Red Devils played in the state championship game.

The Class 5A coach of the year was Michigan City's Phil Mason, who helmed the Wolves to sectional and regional titles, reaching the Class 5A Northern Semistate.

Kevin Enright of Crown Point was named the Class 6A coach of the year. The Bulldogs reached the 6A regional.
