Hammond Academy canceled the remainder of its girls basketball season due to injuries and lack of participation. 

"The 2017-18 Hammond Academy Hawks are cancelling their girls basketball season," athletic director Eric Speer said. "The Hawks had 12 girls to start the season, but after recent injuries and eligbility issues, our girls do not have enough to participate in a full JV or varsity schedule. Our athletic program's number one goal is to ensure a fun, safe environment for our athletes and with low numbers that wouldn't be possible. We will continue to build our middle school program in hopes of a bright future."

The Hawks (1-3) had six games remaining on their schedule. Hammond Academy missed last season's sectional after it failed to field a team in the regular season.

Franklin County Tournament: Emma Nolan posted 19 points, also outscoring the opposing team, in a 44-17 win for Times No. 1 Marquette Catholic over Franklin County in the title game.

Sophia Nolan added nine points for the Blazers (13-1).

The Nolans were both named to the All-Tournament Team.

Twin Lakes Tournament: Crown Point won the tournament with a 47-43 victory over Indianapolis Cathedral in the semifinals and then a 51-43 triumph over Mt. Vernon (Fortville) in the title game.

Mya Scheidt (14 points), Ellie VanDeel (12) and Caitlyn Phillips (11) led the way for the Bulldogs in the semifinals. Scheidt paced the Bulldogs with 13 points in the championship.

Times No. 3 Valparaiso took fourth place losing its semifinal game to Mt. Vernon 49-43 then dropping the third place game to Cathedral 54-49.

Ari Gerdt posted 21 points to lead the Vikings in the semifinal loss.

Penn Classic: Sahara Bee racked up 25 points and snagged 14 rebounds to lead Morgan Township to a 78-72 win over Oregon-Davis at the Penn Classic.

Emma O'Brien added 19 points in the win for the Cherokees (9-5). Talia Bee scored 18 points and had eight rebounds.

Penn later defeated Morgan Twp. 62-30.

Westville 67, Hebron 55: Sarah Weston knocked down 15-of-18 free throws and scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Blackhawks (9-5, 3-3) to a Porter County Conference victory.

Nicole Albers added 14 points, four assists and eight steals for Westville. Morgan Shreves had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Katlyn Cherry led the Hawks (5-10, 1-5) with 15 points and three steals. Allison Hano had eight points and nine rebounds.

Boys basketball

Lebanon Tournament: Colin Kenney recorded 25 points as Marquette Catholic rolled to a 92-57 win over Indianapolis International in the first round.

Buddy Jaffee knocked down five 3-pointers and scored 21 for the Blazers (3-7). Chandler Goodwin (14) and Tommy Gotsch (10) were also in double figures.

Big Dipper Tournament: William Hanyard knocked down four 3s and scored 19 points for Michigan City as it was edged 72-70 by Rich East in the semifinals of the consolation bracket at the Big Dipper Tournament at Rich South.

Alex Thomas and Jaivion Reid added 13 points apiece for the Wolves (3-6).

Times No. 3 Bowman Academy defeated Farragut 68-63 in a championship sub-bracket game.

Langston Stalling poured in 29 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead the Eagles (8-2). Chinedu Okanu contributed a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds.

Montell Bates had 17 points to lead Times No. 6 Hammond to a 53-43 win over Rich South in the other championship sub-bracket game.

Malik Miller added 10 points and Reggie Abrams had nine for the Wildcats (7-2).

Lakeland Christian Classic: Covenant Christian notched a pair of pool play wins at the Lakeland Christian Classic at Grace College as the Knights downed Lakeland Christian 76-56 and then South Bend Trinity 61-40.

Ben Lins had 19 in the first win as Covenant Christian put four players in double figures. Gavin Heerema added 17, while Andrew Ingram and Cade Walstra each had 10.

Chris Beezhold paced Covenant Christian in the second game with 15 points and a 7-of-8 mark from the charity stripe. Heerema added 10.

The Knights (9-1) play today for first place.

Kankakee Christmas Tournament: Daniel Chandler scored a team-high 19 points but Illiana Christian took a 64-56 overtime loss to Herscher at the Kankakee Christmas Tournament.

Collin Flipse added 15 points and Joshua Harris had 13 for the Vikings.

River Forest 78, Boone Grove 50: Jordan Higgins poured in 34 points as the Ingots (7-3) cruised past the Wolves.

Alex Mosqueda added 19 points for River Forest.

Westville 35, Hebron 33: Cade Albers had a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards to lead the Blackhawks (6-3, 3-2) to a narrow PCC victory.

Tyrese Walker chipped in 11 points and had a pair of assists and steals for Westville.

Boys swimming

Wheeler 93, Merrillville 83: Aiden Hostetler (200-yard individual medley, 100 breaststroke) and Sonny Vitello (50, 100 freestyle) doubled up on wins, adding one more on the 200 free relay as the Bearcats edged the Pirates.

Tyler Jasso won the 200 and 500 free for Merrillville.

Girls swimming

Merrillville 99, Wheeler 78: Prysma Valdivia won the 500 free and Emile Leifelt won the 100 breast and both swam a leg of the victorious 200 free relay in a win for the Pirates.

Lily Graske (100 backstroke, 200 IM) and Morganne Marrs (50 free, 100 butterfly) were double-winners for the Bearcats and both swam legs of the winning 200 medley and 400 free relays..
