representing the 2nd Congressional District.
The Cook County Republican Central Committee elected Panayotovich to succeed
Lois Stevenson in the post at a meeting earlier this week.
Former Cook County Undersheriff James Dvorak, who chose not to seek a second
term as chairman of the central committee, was elected state committeeman from
the 3rd Congressional District, succeeding Steven Rosenbaum of Oak Lawn.
The state central committee, which raises money, oversees policies and
promotes party-endorsed candidates, will elect its new chairman April 27. The
current chairman is Albert Jourdan of McHenry.
CHICAGO HEIGHTS - Mayor Charles Panici, the Bloom Township Republican
committeeman, was in serious condition at St. James Hospital and Health Centers
Friday morning after suffering a heart attack, a hospital spokesman said.
Panici, 59, was admitted to the hospital at 7:50 p.m. Thursday and was
resting in the coronary care unit, hospital spokesman Laurie Peterson said.
LANSING - The village's Planning and Zoning Board of Appeals refused Al
Friesema's request for a variance to permit construction of an oversized garage
at 3620 Randolph St.
Friesema needed a 114-square-foot variance to construct a 24-by-36-foot
garage on his property.
The maximum number of feet allowed for garages is 750 square feet.
Friesema said he needed the additional room to use as storage for his three
sons' bikes and cars.
In spite of written statements from neighbors who approved of the garage's
size, the board voted against the variance.
LYNWOOD - District 172 School Board met in executive session Friday night to
hear Superintendent Richard Wangerow give a proposal in reaction to the recent
board vote not to renew his contract.
President Bill Bowers said Wangerow legally has a right to meet with the
board, and no action was taken.
