There's no better measure of what's good in Northwest Indiana than the people who constantly work to make it an even better place.

Some of the "do-gooders" are well known. Some you might not have heard of. Here are some people I find worth a mention:

• Nate Williams is not a household name, but he has been a leader in Gary, pushing for a vibrant Gary-Chicago International Airport.

• Lee Botts and retired IUN profession Mark Reshkin can always be counted on to get a spotlight on environmental issues.

• During every session of the Indiana General Assembly, state Rep. Charlie Brown, D-Gary, tries to drum up state support for a teaching hospital and trauma center in Gary.

• Crown Point Mayor Dave Uran worked across the political aisle in leading development of a stunning new sports complex on the city's east side.

• Tom Collins, a Chicago developer with a home in Miller, quietly steps in to help several region charities when there is an hour of need.

I could go on and on and move from community to community. The unsolicited goodness devoted by many residents of the region would really make quite a long list.

And then there are those who seem to draw a bit of controversy but still are doing good. For instance, Speros Batistatos, CEO of the South Shore Convention & Visitors Authority, is shameless in promoting the region and keeps pushing for a unified tourism agency for all of Northwest Indiana. He is right.

Whatever the situation, there are many people in our community who are willing to step up and help build a better region.

As we move deeper into 2012, I urge you to take time to identify how you can help.
